5 Free and Effective Tools to get You on Googles Top Pages

These Free SEO plugins and extensions will help you track your progress and keep up with your competitors.

When it comes to Search Engine Optimisation (SEO,) there is no such thing as too much data. Ideally, you should track everything you do, as well as have a good idea of what your competitors are up to and how to rank above them.

Professional premium tools such as SEMrush, for example, offer amazing detailed reports and are essential for anyone working in this field. However, as I said above there is no such thing as too much data, so here is a list of smart little tools that every SEO professional must have. Most are plugins and extensions, that can be added to your browser and can bring a great value when used alongside premium SEO tools.

1. Keyword everywhere plugin

One of my personal favourites. This one is great to be used not just for SEO but for Pay Per Click (PPC) too and any Search Engine Marketing (SEM) in general. Added as a plug-in to your browser it instantly gives you volume, Cost Per Click (CPC) and competition for every search query you enter. It also gives you the same information for related searches.

You can export this data in Comma Separated Values (CSV) format instantly and it is really useful when working on keyword research, sometimes it gives you ideas that can be missed when researching with a premium tool or AdWords keyword research.

2. Moz toolbar

Moz is a premium SEO tool, but you can use this toolbar without getting the main software. It can be really helpful when looking for potential backlink opportunities because, when activated it allows you to see domain authority and page authority for each organic search results on your Search Engine Results Pages (SERP.) It also highlights links by colours, if they are internal or external. It also shows you if the links on the website are followed or non-follow. While visually the same, non-follow links are not seen by the web crawlers. Non-follow links still bring you traffic, but will not pass any domain authority from the linking website.

3. See Robots extension

Another one I use a lot, especially when doing technical SEO. See Robots lets you check how crawlers see each of your, or your competitor’s pages and if they are indexing it or not. It highlights robots tags and lets you see what the robots see. It’s a much easier and simpler way than doing regular in-depth site audits when you just want to have a quick check.

4. META SEO inspector

This is another really useful smart tool that will help check the metadata for each of your pages,  as well as how many characters are used. It also alerts you if the page headers are not correctly arranged; or if your pictures lack ALT attributes. Every time you load a page, it will alert you if something is missing. They might seem like small things, but they matter and this tool is perfect to make sure everything is as it should be.

5. Serpbot (previously Serplab)  

This one is not an extension, neither is it free but it can be really useful if you can’t afford premium SEO tools, but still want to check your rankings. Serpbot allows you to track a limited amount of keywords and rankings for free for the first two weeks and then you can pay and hire a bot for a very affordable price.

As a huge SEO geek, I almost constantly use all of the above extensions. My work laptop SERP looks completely different from my home laptop. Every time I search something, these plugins give me so much more than just search results and help me see what my competitors have been up to; where they link from; what metadata they use; if they have any weak spots; how they link internally and so on.
