The Legend of Coca-Cola

The history of Santa Claus dates back hundreds of years and during this time he has been portrayed in numerous ways. He has been drawn tall and short, fat and gaunt, kindly and frightening. He has been drawn wearing many colours: brown, blue, green and many years before Coca-Cola even existed, St Nick was pictured wearing Scarlett.

However, to give Coca-Cola the credit they deserve, their artist Haddon Sundblom did create society’s modern vision of Santa Claus as the big, jolly man in a red suit.

Coca-Cola began running adverts featuring Santa Claus in the 1920’s but it was not until the 1930s that our current image Santa came to exist. Coca-Cola commissioned Sundblom to create a wholesome image of Santa for adverts to feature in popular magazines of the time and the rest, as they say, is history.
